Motorola’s Droid 2 has only been out for a few days, but a considerable number of users have reported that the Droid 2 seems to be suffering from an antenna or signal-related issue. Antennagate for Android? Maybe. Actually, this is different from the iPhone 4’s antenna problem; that was triggered when you held the iPhone the ‘wrong way.’ The Droid 2’s problem—at least for some units—happens even when it’s just lying down on the table.
Some of the first units, including all four phones being tested by Engadget, showed a “wildly fluctuating meter while the phone’s sitting still, weak or no reception in places where you’re usually fine on Verizon, and a complete lack of data service.” Other users observed the same thing, while other users—who are either not too nitpicky, or just plain lucky with non-lemon units—said they weren’t having any problems though.
It doesn’t seem like it’s a matter of available signal since the reports have been coming from all over, but it does seem like something that could be fixed with a software patch. Since it happens even when it’s just sitting on a table on its own, it doesn’t look like free cases will help. Maybe it’s just a case of math gone wrong. One thing’s for sure though: Steve Jobs is laughing on the inside right now.
