Apple’s 4.0.2 update patches PDF security flaw, plugs JailbreakMe exploit ios 402 updateApple quickly released a new iOS 4.0.2 update to close the PDF vulnerability that could allow the installation of malicious code into devices running iOS 4.0.1. Unfortunately, this also closes the window on the awesome JailbreakMe 2.0 method that allowed anyone with an internet connection to jailbreak an iOS 4 device in an instant. So everyone running on iOS 4.0.1 and 3.2.1 (for iPads), just fire up iTunes and run the auto update to close up the hole pronto if you’re concerned about the security risk. Jailbreakers, you might want to hold on for a second. Essential info after the break.

If you’re rocking a jailbroken or unlocked device, you don’t want to update to 4.0.2 if you want to continue your Jailbroken ways. It could take a while to get another JB and unlock out, so here’s a band-aid for that pesky PDF exploit in the meantime:

  • Open Cydia and tap on “search.”
  • Search for PDF Loading Warner and install it.

And that’s it. This little app will warn you whenever a PDF file is being downloaded into your device. You can either prevent it or allow it, depending on if you know the file’s source (and if you actually meant to download a PDF file).

Now, if you really want to patch up to 4.0.2, go right on ahead. Just make sure to make backups of your SHSH blobs with TinyUmbrella in case you want to roll back to a previous iOS version. There’s an easy TinyUmbrella how-to over at  Redmond Pie.
