The Toshiba Libretto W100, the world’s first dual-screened tablet that folds like a notebook, will initially launch in Japan on August 11. Powered by a Windows 7 OS, the device packs in a pair of 7-inch multi-touch screens that change depending on running apps. When set down and used like you would a notebook, the bottom screen turns into a virtual keyboard. A pair of accelerometers can also turn the screen automatically for reading e-books like you would a regular book.
Certainly nifty design. while the netbook spec (1.2GHz Pentium US400 CPU, 2GB RAM, 64GB solid state storage) might not be as snappy as the iPad or Android slate, the Windows 7 OS might actually prove to be a selling point for people looking for a more traditional mobile computing experience. The spec’s rounded out by a microSDHC card for storage expansion, integrated Webcam and Bluetooth, and a single USB port that’ll allow you to plug in other useful peripherals like a desktop keyboard if you’re not into virtual keyboards.
The international release wasn’t announced, but it’ll be priced at $1,099 when it reaches the US.
