Just about everyone has already come out with a rugged compact digicam that you can take around 10 feet underwater, but this is different. Sanyo’s Xacti VPC-CA102 is a dedicated consumer HD camcorder you can dive in with. It still comes in the Xacti line’s easy one-hand for factor too, so it shouldn’t be that hard to take anywhere.
Able to shoot either 1080p HD video or 14-megapixel stills in up to 10 feet of water, the CA102 packs a 5x optical zoom lens with a 38mm angle. Recording is done in H.264 to make it easily Mac-compatible, and stores everything to an SD card (high-capacity SDXC cards are supported). The slim frame also features a mini HDMI out port for playing HD videos to an HD display, although battery life is a bit limited to an hour of continuous filming.
The CA102 is due out this month for $350, available in a single yellow color option. We’re not necessary fans of the color, but that’s arguably the most attractive ripe-banana shade of yellow we’ve ever seen on anything not made by Lamborghini, so we have to admit that it really looks good enough to eat.
