We never really thought it was that big a deal, but hey, Samsung might be on to something here. Their new PL90 entry-level cam comes with a USB connection that swings out from the body, because really, nobody bothers to pack the cable that comes with the cam anymore. It’s a little more handy than just serving as a way to transfer photos to a computer though; this cam can charge its battery via USB.
It’s not that original though, since pocket video camcorders have been rocking built-in USB plugs for a while now, but it still makes for a whole level of handy for a digicam. No one really bothers with the USB cable anymore since you can always slip the memory card into a laptop and do transfers that way, after all. But the integrated charging function? Handy. So yeah, you can leave all your cables at home, like you always do.
As for this camera’s actual camera bits, it’s a pretty basic point-and-shoot as far as today’s average point-and-shoot goes. The PL90 packs a 12.2MP sensor, 4x zoom lens and a basic non-HD video recorder (it’s limited to standard VGA recording). In-cam tech includes the usual automatic helpers to make shooting as easy as pressing a button: Scene detection, Face, smile and blink detection, plus a nifty new self-portrait feature that gives off a sound to let you know when your face is in the frame.
Not much by way of digital imaging tech, but this is an entry-level cam that’s priced at an affordable $150. It’s set to be released in September.
