Amazon unveils 3rd gen Kindle, adds Wi fi model to the mix Amazon Kindle 3rdGen 3Amazon’s new Kindle reader should prove that there’s still a healthy market for dedicated ebook readers amidst slew of iPads and other Android-based tablets. The upcoming 3rd-gen Kindle features an improved design that’s 21 percent smaller and 15 percent lighter than the previous model while maintaining the 6-inch screen size and a profile that’s as slim as a pencil. Performance should be way better too, with a new E Ink Pearl display that offers better contrast and faster page turns, and a battery that’s listed to last for a month if you turn off the wireless antennas.

The third-gen Kindle also includes a model that comes with a Wi-fi only option for people who don’t really need (or want to pay for) a 3G connection. A Wi-fi-and-3G model will still be available though, with the ability to automatically switch between connections depending on what’s faster or what’s available. Storage on all models have also been doubled, giving you the capacity to store up to 3,500 books. That’s basically more books than you’ll ever have time to read.

Other new “experimental” features include a “Read-to-me” function that’ll let the device read content out loud to you, a Voice Guide feature that’ll let you navigate the menu options without reading the menu, a Webkit-based browser that connects through Wi-fi or free 3G, and the ability to play MP3 music and Podcasts in the background.

Probably the best part if you’re looking to buy an ereader? The price. Amazon maintains the previous model’s $189 price tag for the 3G and Wi-fi model, but if you don’t need the 3G connection, the Wi-fi only version will cost you only $139. Both versions will be available in graphite black and white colors when they ship in August 27th in the US and UK. Optional accessories include a $35 leather case, and a $60 case that packs a reading light.
