WD gets artsy with new limited edition My Passport Essential drives WD My Passport Essential limitedWestern Digital just cooked a way to spice up the mobile hard drive market by releasing five My Passport Essential drives with limited edition designs. Labeled as Boom Box, Black Hole, Cityscape, Fuschia Leaf and Wave, the patterns were created by design students at the California State University and slapped on top of WD’s shiny vanilla My Passport Essential drives.

Although they’re labeled as limited editions, we have no idea how limited they are, and the price doesn’t make them too exclusive to the regular consumer (which isn’t a bad thing at all): The limited edition designs add $10 more to the vanilla 500GB Essential’s $110 price tag. It’s all cosmetic though; under all the makeup, you still get a 500GB 2.5-inch drive preinstalled with WD’s SmartWare software for 256-bit hardware encryption. It’s simply a stylish option for an extra ten bucks if you’re into that kind of thing.
