Dissecting a frog for Biology class is possibly one of the most interesting activities nearly everyone has to go through. And for the squeamish, it could get really gruesome and as potentially personality-altering as dodgeball during high school Physical Ed. Now, with the release of Emantras Inc.’s Frog Dissection app, you don’t need to grasp that scalpel in your shaking hand and come out of the Bio lab with the fresh stench of frog blood and guts mashed with formaldehyde.
Simply put, Frog Dissection is an app that simulates, well, dissecting a frog. It presents you with a virtual frog in its dorsal side and, with a series of dissection tools like pins, scalpels and forceps, will provide step-by-step instructions on gutting the amphibian open. With the touchscreen, you can simply drag the tools onto your frog to cut the layers of virtual skin and sinew to expose the inner organs.
Once the innards are visible, you can just tap on the major organs and a pop up will appear showing a closer look, rotating in detailed 360 degrees and an accompanying description. Apparently, according to the app’s page on the App Store, subject matter experts were heavily involved during the development process to make sure of its anatomic accuracy and its user interface optimized for the iPad’s touchscreen.
These features make it a great practice tool before you actually head out and free a frog from the trappings of a physical body. It also perfect for students allergic to formaldehyde and those budding animal activists. In fact, Frog Dissection has recently been recognized by PETA with the Mark Twain Ethical Science Award which is given to initiatives, organizations and products that oppose the abuse of animals during scientific experiments.

So it’s an app awarded by an animal rights organization with a background of controversial activist methods which lets you take a peek inside a frog and learn about anatomy. At its price, it’s a relatively cheap app considering the price of acquiring a living, breathing frog and surgical instruments and the ominous feeling that you’re murdering something that would’ve otherwise overpopulated the nearest pond.
Kidding aside, Frog Dissection is a great educational app for both students and educators with pretty good features. Frog Dissection is available for the iPad and retails at $4.99 from the Apple App Store.
We sure wish this was around when it was our turn to gut a frog; it could’ve spared us some disturbing images like post-mortem muscle twitching. You know, like this:
