Apple raises the bar on iOS 4.0.1 update. Literally. ios 4 update

In case you (those of you who own iPhones, at least) didn’t notice, Apple just released the final iOS 4.0.1 update that’s been hanging around the Apple dev page for a few days now. What does it do? Well, it’ll fix your signal bars like they said. Or at least fix how it’ll look. And no, it still won’t fix the antenna issue.

Anyway, here’s what the iOS 4.0.1 update fixes:

  • The promised signal formula calculation
  • Also, they made the bars look bigger. Check out Gizmodo’s chart to see just how much they literally “raised the bars.”

There’s an upside though; while the new signal formula translates into more realistic bars (meaning, you’re going to see a lot less bars a lot more often), it’ll also flash the “no service” sign a lot less often as well.

Still, if you’re running iOS 4 and have no plans of jailbreaking that thing anytime soon, go ahead and have your bar raised anyway. The download’s around 300MB, and is available for the iPhone 4, 3GS, and 3G models. Just open iTunes, and click the update button.

As for the iPhone 3G, there have been a lot of reports about significantly slowed-down performance, which kind of makes us wonder why Apple offered the upgrade to 3G owners in the first place (you’ll barely get anything new on the 3G anyway, ‘cept for folders and iBooks support). Probably another sinister ploy to make you want a newer iPhone (we’re not putting this past Apple’s marketing geniuses). Anyway here’s a simple guide on how to downgrade back to iOS 3.1.3 in case you miss how quick and nimble your old iPhone used to run.

For iPad owners, Apple also released the 3.2.1 update. Here’s what got tweaked:

  • Improved Wi-fi connectivity
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent copy and paste of single-page PDF attachments in Mail
  • Addressed an issue that could cause video playback to freeze
  • Improved reliability of video-out when using iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter
  • Added Bing as an option for Safari’s search field
