For some reason, LaCie’s XtremKey flash drive is built to take on a truck LaCie XtremeKey 2

While we’d all want our flash drives to come with enough protection to survive rough conditions, LaCie’s XtremeKey USB 2.0 flash drive takes it a step further. First off, it comes in a shell that’s built to take on conditions that are so extreme, you’d have to wonder why you’d need it in the first place.

Here’s the list of conditions that it’s listed to survive: up to 100 meters (328 feet) of water, drops from five meters, temperatures between 392 and -58 degrees Farenheit, and being run over by a 20-ton truck. They weren’t joking when they used the word “Xtreme” (yeah, with an “X”). We honestly can’t think of anything we’d want to do with a flash drive a hundred meters underwater. And if we ever accidentally dropped it in 100 meters of water, well, we’d probably just shrug our shoulders and shop for a new one. It would still be pretty awesome to have, though. Because your buddy’s flash drive? It probably won’t even survive a three-minute spin cycle in the washer.

Anyway, for whatever use you may dream up for it, the extra levels of protection is brought about by a 2mm-thick zamac (that’s zinc, aluminum, magnesium and copper) alloy shell with a rubber-sealed screw-on top. In case you were wondering. Also, it’s built to wobble on your desk. For some reason, LaCie’s XtremKey flash drive is built to take on a truck LaCie XtremeKey 1Set to ship in August, the XtremeKey starts at $50 for the 8GB model, and tops out at 64GB.
