Samsung has just announced that they’ll be releasing the Galaxy Beam I8520—the world’s first smartphone with a built-in pico projector—next week in Singapore. For something that already packs a very specialized feature, the specs are pretty good, making it something you won’t just buy for the projector.
The phone part is solid, running on an Android 2.1 OS, a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, an 800MHz processor, Bluetooth and Wi-fi connectivity, and a nice 8MP cam with a flash and 720p HD video recording—pretty sweet compared to the 5MP snapper on the I9000 Galaxy S. It’s going to need all those pixels too, since the pico projector on top of the phone blows up multimedia content up to 50 inches in size.
Singapore’s StarHub gets first crack at the Android-running projector phone by next week, with prices that top out at SGD$398 (around US$288) depending on the contract. No word (at least none yet) regarding release dates in other markets though.
