Location-based social network Gowalla has implemented a few nifty tweaks on their iPhone and iPod touch app, stamped the v2.2 nomenclature on it and unleashed it onto Apple’s App Store yesterday.
Among the first few changes you’d notice after downloading and launching Gowalla 2.2 is a significant pixel-polishing of its user interface and all of its Category Stamps to match the resolution-pumped Retina Display on the iPhone 4. But, as the official post on the Gowalla blog states, this is merely a first of many improvements to come to the app as far as pimping the graphics and enhancing user experience are concerned.
“We’ll be updating Featured Spots, Pins, and Items behind-the-scenes until every bit of Gowalla truly shines.” said the blog post.

The app update takes advantage of iOS 4’s multitasking capabilities for fast app switching, improves on continuous geo-tracking of nearby locations and even fixes some old glitches users have reported to be present in the previous versions. We have yet to download and test the app but, given its multitasking support, it’ll probably also enable background task completing as well.

Other notable feature additions include quick sign up for a Gowalla account directly within the app, the ability to port information off your iPhone Address Book and an easier way to hook up to your Twitter and Facebook profiles.
Gowalla 2.2 for the iPhone and iPod touch comes as a free download from the App Store and, following last month’s localization update, it will also initially be available in Arabic, French, German, Japanese and Spanish.
