Verizon officially outs the Droid X, ready to take on the iPhone 4 moto droidxVerizon just officially unveiled the Motorola Droid X, the network’s top-end Android-based smartphone that’s built to take on the iPhone 4 with what looks like a superior spec—although the iPhone 4 still looks to have the best looking screen. The Droid X should be able to hold its own though, with a relatively huge 4.3-inch (854 x 480) screen, 1GHz processor, and a pocket full of other features that—at least according to their marketing angle—the iPhone won’t have.

The camera is pretty flush, with an 8MP sensor, a dual LED flash, HD image and 720p video recording, and image stabilization features. For multimedia, the Droid X can also handle 720p HD playback, three microphones for multi-directional audio recording (one of the three is for noise cancelling), HDMI-out, and the usual pack of connectivity options that includes Wi-fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

Here’s where it plans to separate from the iPhone: it comes with an SD card slot for adding to the built-in 8GB of storage, supports Flash 10.1 (as a post-release update), and a mobile hotspot feature that allows it to share a 3G connection with up to five other Wi-fi devices (although this feature will only be available if you pay an extra $20 on top of the Verizon package). It lacks a front-facing cam though, which the iPhone 4 features for video chatting.

Google’s usual software pack comes with the Android 2.1 OS (the 2.2 update will also be available soon), but this phone also comes with a preinstalled Blockbuster app that’ll let you download movies straight to the phone.

The Droid X will be released on July 15th for $199 after a mail-in rebate—a little late, but still close enough to the iPhone 4’s delayed delivery dates (currently pushed back to July 14th).
