Altec Lansing’s new Octiv Mini isn’t the most advanced iPhone speaker-dock out there, but it’s relatively affordable, which makes it good enough for us and every other Average Joe who happens to have an iPhone. Regular charge and audio playing is a given on the compact Octiv Mini, but Altec Lansing also offers a free Alarm Rock app to go with it, adding a handy alarm clock function to the device without having to add any more built-in tech that you’re going to have to pay for. The design’s pretty original too—a nice little bonus if you’re into tweaked geometric shapes.

The compact body holds a single 3-inch full-range driver that should be good enough to wake you up, but after the charge, play, and alarm functions (and the interesting shape if you’re into that), there isn’t much else going on. Much of the functionality’s software-based after you pick up the Alarm Rock app for the iPhone or iPod touch. The app can replace the default alarm sounds with any song on your iDevice, and can be set with multiple alarm settings, including repeatable weekly alarms.

The Octav Mini will cost $60 when it gets released in July, and will be bundled with multiple dock adapters for docking iPhones, and iPods including the non-touch iPod classics and minis.
