After numerous leaks spoiled the surprise, Sony Ericsson finally officially announced the Xperia X8, which was previously tagged (for some reason) as the Shakira. Despite the model number, the phone seems to fall right between the top-end Xperia X10 and the X10 mini in terms of screen size and resolution, although the rest of the spec points to a low-end to mid-range Android smartie. Full specs available after the cut.

The software is still stuck on the dated Android 1.6 too, which makes it similar to the preinstalled OS on the X10 and the mini when they were launched, although Sony Ericsson did announce that the X10, X10 mini and the keypad-sliding X10 mini pro will be getting an update to Android 2.1 soon. The X8 also features SE’s Timescape feature that integrates social network updates and messages in one place, and will also be using the same four-corner touchscreen interface found on the X10 mini that adds app shortcuts along the screen’s corners to save on space.
SE didn’t give out a price or exact availability date, but the rest of the phone’s spec, but the rest of the spec—especially the camera—points to a phone that should be cheaper than the X10 mini.
