Razer outs Starcraft II themed gear with smart lighting system Razer Spectre

Lining up with the release of the much-anticipated StarCraft sequel next month, gaming peripherals maker Razer has announced three new StarCraft II-themed PC peripherals: the Spectre mouse, Mrauder keyboard and Banshee headset. Not a StarCraft fan? That’s okay. All three products are pretty high-end and set-up for gaming performance. Just don’t mind the StarCraft II logo that lights up.

The five-button Spectre mouse is a fast pointer, featuring Razer’s 1000Hz Utrapolling tech and 5600dpi Precision 3.5G laser sensor for accuracy and fast response, while the Banshee headset sports a pair or 50mm drivers, a mic, and an equalizer with 8 presets along with manual controls if you want your sound levels personalized.

The Marauder keyboard is our pick of the set, mainly because we like keyboards with backlit buttons (they look cool and have proven to be useful when gaming in the dark). The Marauder sports elevated keys with a short travel distance to give you a nice feel, with fast response. The keys are also designed to be spaced well apart to avoid accidental key presses. Like any respectable gaming keyboard, this kit also features on-the-fly macro recording that allows you to program different key combos. As a bonus, you don’t even have to leave the game to set a profile and into a separate configuration window.

All three SCII-themed products feature Razer’s APM (Actions Per Minute) lighting system that measures your game activity and changes color to reflect what you’re doing. Depending on how you configure it, the lights could start as green when everything’s cool and calm, change to yellow when things start to heat up, and end up with red when you’re clicking and moving around like mad during full-scale battles. Although it looks awesome, that’s of no use gaming-wise, although the APM system has one more trick: it can also be configured to flash a color to reflect game alerts (like “base under attack” or “unit built”). Check out this page to see how APM works.

Nice touch, Razer. We just hope other games get APM support soon after. We don’t plan on playing StarCraft II all the time.

The Spectre will cost $80, while the Banshee headset and Marauder keyboard costs $120 each. They’re all set for a Q3 2010 release with no specific dates, but  we expect them to be available by the time StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty rolls out on July 27th.
