Nintendo details upcoming 3DS handheld at E3 nintendo3ds lg2

Nintendo finally gave out initial (and official) details for the 3DS handheld during their E3 keynote. The dual-screen handheld still basically looks like the dual-screened DSi, but the 3.5-inch top screen will support 3D visuals without needing any special glasses.

A 3D effect slider will let you tweak the depth of the 3D effects, which applies to photos and movies aside from gaming. Dual cameras behind the handheld will let you create 3D images, with tech that resembles the dual-lens system found on Fujifilm’s FinePix Real 3D W1 digicam.

As for the gaming side of things, the 3DS will be adding a lot of features that’ll let it compete with popular handheld platforms, such as Sony’s PSP and Apple’s iPhone. Analog controls will be added above the regular d-pad, while a motion sensor and gyroscope adds the ability to support tilt and shake movements, like what you’d normally find on iPhone-based games. Although, if they really wanted to compete with Apple, we were hoping for some cheap (but still fun) games you can download for $0.99.

Overall performance will also be significantly better, with a faster graphics processor that provides generally better-looking games. Wi-fi connectivity is also expected, which will allow the 3DS to automatically download game updates.

Pretty exciting stuff, if you’re a handheld gamer. Nintendo didn’t announce an official launch dates or a price range for the 3DS though, but they did imply that it might not be available this year so don’t get your hopes up just yet.
