Apple outs all new Mac mini: $100 more will get you a faster mini Mac Mini 2Apple just unveiled the all-new Mac mini, which basically keeps the ultra-compact form factor, but sports an updated spec that should significantly improve performance.

The exterior is built with an all-new 1.4-inch thin aluminum unibody enclosure that matches the new Mac and Macbook designs. The new enclosure also sports a removable bottom panel that should make it easy to upgrade the system’s memory (sparing you from having to tear down the shiny new body to add memory), and is also designed to house the mini’s power supply that eliminates the need for a brick along the power cord.

The rear panel also adds a few new features, including an HDMI port for plugging it straight into an HDTV, and an SD card slot (an SD card slot!), which was something the previous mini didn’t have. The rest of the connections include a Mini DisplayPort jack, four USB ports, FireWire 800, Ethernet, and audio jacks.

Unfortunately, the base configuration’s price also saw an “upgrade,” to the tune of $100 more than the previous Mac mini’s price. Now starting at $699, this new system gets you a nicely upgraded spec though, powered by a faster 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, and a newer Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics processor that’s listed to offer twice the graphics performance of the previous mini. Or, if you didn’t own the older Mac mini, all you have to know is that this will perform better on 3D gaming, high-res photos, and HD video playback. The rest of the base configuration includes 2GBs of memory and a 320GB hard drive with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Wi-fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and an 8x SuperDrive packed into the silver case.

The upscale version comes with a faster 2.66GHz processor, double the memory at 4GBs, dual 500GB hard drives (1TB total), and a Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard operating system for $999.
