Western Digital’s new My Book Studio LX drive won’t come cheap, but it’s certainly pretty thanks to an all-aluminum exterior case that matches the Mac’s style (as a bonus, it also keeps the drive cool while running for hours). It’s also built to perform, with a FireWire 800 interface for saving and accessing data faster than you’d normally get on the average USB interface.

Like the rest of WD’s revamped My Book line of external drives, the Studio LX features an e-label up front that can be customized to describe what’s being stored in the drive. The e-label also displays the remaining capacity that’s readily seen even when the computer is turned off. For security, the Studio LX features 256-bit hardware-based encryption with password protection to keep everything safe from prying eyes.

As for the whole built-to-work-with-Macs feature, the Studio LX comes with SmartWare backup software that offers continuous backups that can work with any computer, but it can also support and sync with Apple’s Time Machine feature if you’re working with a Mac (which is most probable, because we can’t imagine why you’d buy this when the My Book Elite is way cheaper). Aside from the FireWire 800 port, it also comes with standard USB 2.0 for connecting to any other PC.

Available now, the Studio LX comes in 1TB and 2TB capacities for $200 and $280 respectively.
