Yeah, you read that right. The touchpads on these new notebooks from Gateway light up when you touch ‘em. We see the promise of having backlit keyboards (and as insomniacs wit fingers that are literally glued to our laptop keyboards, we strongly believe that all notebooks should come with this feature), but glowing touchpads? It’s cute and all, but is that really necessary?
Don’t answer that. It’s really not necessary. When was the last time you looked down at the touchpad while moving the mouse anyway? Well, this might make you look down—at least when you first try it out. Because the touchpad buttons are integrated into the pad, so you won’t be able to feel them like you would on the average laptop pad. Anyway, as a design feature, we have to say they look pretty cool nevertheless.
Spotted and photographed by Engadget on the Computex 2010 showroom floor, the glowing touchpads will be featured on two upcoming laptops: the 13.3-inch EC339C and the 14-inch ID49Co8u. Both laptop models are still listed as “coming soon,” with no word on pricing and availability yet, but they both sport Gateway’s dedicated social networking button (basically a shortcut to a widget that shows you social network feeds) and chiclet-style keyboards.
The EC39C will feature a Core i5 ULC processor and Nvidia’s Optimus graphics switching tech, thile the 14-incher will run on a system made up of a Core i5 processor, 4GBs of memory, and a 500GB hard drive.
