Hitachi just introduced the Travelstar Z7K320, a 320GB mobile hard drive for notebooks that carves out its name not with capacity (which is pretty average), but with a really slim, 7mm profile that should help pave the way for even slimmer notebook designs.
It won’t be breaking any speed records either, but that 7200rpm drive speed hits the higher-end of the mobile drive speed scale, compared to regular drives that usually spins at 5400rpm. (Also, it kind of sets a record on its own, for being the slimmest hard drive to rock a 7200rpm motor). Despite the smaller space, the slim design shouldn’t hamper performance, since the Z7K320 is also packed with a 16MB cache (a cache size you’d normally expect on a typical desktop drive), and connects using the SATA or SATA II interface.
The slim Z-series drive is due out by August, and should be found running the show in awesomely slimmer notebooks before the year ends.
