Freedom from hotspots: Skype 2.0 update for iPhone allows VoIP calls via 3G   Skype2.0 a

Skype has just unleashed a major update for their iPhone app that will let you make Skype-to-Skype calls through a mobile 3G connection. That’s pretty much it for the Skype 2.0 app, but that’s pretty major, right? Calling via a 3G connection means you’re not limited to a Wi-fi hotspot anymore for making VoIP calls or sending SMS across the ocean for less.

According to a report over at Bloomberg, Amazon is preparing to launch a new Kindle ebook reader in August. The sources haven’t been named (described instead as “two people familiar with its plans”), but some details have been revealed to describe a device that won’t really compete with Apple’s iPad.

Tagged as the Core i5-655K and Core i7-875K, these two new K-series processors come with mainstream price tags, but offer something that was previously limited to Intel’s high-end Extreme Edition chips: unlocked core multipliers that allow their clock speeds to be easily raised for better performance.

Acer Stream officially announced, goes heavy on entertainment with HDMI, 720p video   Acer StreamAcer has just officially launched the Stream, a high-end, Android-powered smartphone that packs in enough hardware to hang with the big boys around the premium smartphone yard. Before anything else, here are the basics: this phone sports a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a 480 x 800 resolution up front, a 5MP cam at the back, and Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 512MB RAM between the ears to make for a nice, solid smartphone base.

Altek Leo phone to pack a 14 megapixel cam   altek Leo 1

Nokia’s N8 and its 12-megapixel cam may have sounded like a big deal when it was first announced, but if you’re into really powerful phonecams, this might be something worth checking out: Taiwan-based Altek has just put out a couple of teaser images of the “Leo”, an upcoming 3.5G phone that boasts of a 14-megapixel cam with a 3X optical zoom.
