Freedom from hotspots: Skype 2.0 update for iPhone allows VoIP calls via 3G Skype2.0 a

Skype has just unleashed a major update for their iPhone app that will let you make Skype-to-Skype calls through a mobile 3G connection. That’s pretty much it for the Skype 2.0 app, but that’s pretty major, right? Calling via a 3G connection means you’re not limited to a Wi-fi hotspot anymore for making VoIP calls or sending SMS across the ocean for less.

According to the release, Skype-to-Skype calls made through 3G will also feature “Near CD-quality” audio using the SILK codec found on the iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPod touch 2G and 3G.

The Skype 2.0 app is available for free on iTunes, but the best part is that they’re offering the service for free until the end of 2010 (they’ll be applying a “small monthly fee” after that).
