While Pandigital is more widely known for coming out with digital photo frames, this new foray into full-color ebook readers looks promising. Right off the bat, the Novel’s design looks spot-on, with the clean lines and attractive interface. Add a nice, 7-inch colored touchscreen and Wi-fi connectivity, and it suddenly makes it an interesting option if you’re in the market for an eBook reader.
While you don’t really need a full-color screen for general reading (black and white e-paper screens are more energy-efficient), the colors on this 600 x 800 screen is there for a purpose. It’s not just a reader, you see. The Android platform will also let you play movies (MPEG4 supported) and music, and flip through photos. It also comes bundled with a stand for easy viewing.
It’s limited to Wi-fi connectivity, but for some people, that should be enough (We really don’t need a 3G connection that’ll add to the cost, you see. We’re pretty happy with a hotspot). The Wi-fi antenna built into the Novel will let you browse and buy stuff to read (books, magazines and dailies) through Barnes and Noble’s online store. It comes with a rather limited 1GB of internal storage, but it also comes with an SD card slot for quick expansion.
While it’s not the most-hyped reader out there, we’re interested because, well, the price is right. It’s set to sell for $200 when it gets released in June.
