Previewed N8 unit was a prototype, says Nokia Nokia N8 b

The early N8 that was previewed on the Russian site Mobile Review was apparently an early pre-production prototype that was loaded with dated software. That explains quite a lot. It’s actually not that surprising in a world where disguised, next-gen iPhone prototypes can be lost and found from under the table at your local watering hole.

The same thing might have happened in this case, where Mobile Review questionably got their hands on an early pre-release handset. According to this post over at the Nokia Conversations blog, that particular unit slipped out illegally, and that Nokia is currently hunting down the source of the leak. The blog ended with “now that the official news is out, we’d like our prototype back. Please.”

There’s a lot hanging on this phone, with it being the first phone to flaunt the new Symbian^3 platform, and the bad “preview” didn’t help its case. Nokia just officially introduced the N8 though, so details for the real Symbian^3 experience on a production-quality N8 should at least help counter the bad press Nokia got from that one.
