Nokia’s N8, expected to be the company’s new flagship smartphone, hasn’t been released yet (although it has just been officially announced on the Official Nokia Blog), but this Russian reviewer managed to get an early hands-on. While the phone is detailed to come with a very high-end spec, Mobile Review’s Eldar Murtazin was apparently left unimpressed.
Here are the basics: Nokia’s first multitouch phone is expected to be Nokia’s big answer to current smartphone icons such as the iPhone and other high-end Andoid-based kits. Running on the new Symbian^3 platform that supports multitasking, and a widget-based home screen interface, the preview confirms a pretty impressive spec list that’s headlined by a 12MP Carl Zeiss cam that can record HD 720p videos. For quality, the cam is also helped along with autofocus and a Xenon flash.
The rest of the smartphone’s spec pretty much outlines what we should expect from a high-end Nseries handset: Wi-fi, GPS, and 3G connectivity, 3.5mm audio jack, 16GBs of storage and a software set that heavily leans towards multimedia. That should work nicely with the 3.5-inch 360×640 screen, HDMI connection, and Dolby Digital Plus audio support.
Not bad. Pretty solid in our opinion. Although the reviewer—from what we managed to understand from the translated review—did make a good point: a high-end multimedia-focused cam with a multi-touch screen, a be-widgeted interface, and a nice cam? It doesn’t really spell “original” or new for that matter. It’s definitely better than what Nokia has previously come out with, but time will tell if it holds up to the competition. A pretty tall order with the next-gen iPhone looming around the corner.
According to the Nokia Conversations post, the N8 is expected to be out by the third quarter, with prices set at 370 euros (around $490) before taxes.
Here’s a video preview (from Nokia’s YouTube page) for the N8.
Whatever. It still looks like a fine smartie from here.
