Memory maker Transcend has just released the StoreJet 25D3, a fast, rugged portable drive that offers faster transfer speeds than the average 2.5-incher. “Fast” depends on your system though, since the StoreJet comes with a USB 3.0 interface.
For people running computers that feature the new USB 3,0 standard, you’re in for a treat. The StoreJet 25D3 offers real-world transfer speeds of up to 90MB/s, for copying big files in a hurry. For everyone else? The drive is still backwards-compatibe, so you’ll still get to use the drive on any computer with a USB port, although the speeds are going to be limited to what your port will allow.
The drive sports a multicolor status LED to let you know what interface is running; the light turns blue when you’re connected via USB 3.0 for 90MB/s of file-copy goodness, and it turns orange with a USB 2.0 hook-up to let you know (indirectly) that you really need to upgrade that thing soon.
As for the drive’s toughness, it’s packed with an internal suspension that cushions the drive from accidental slips and falls, making it “good for travel.” They didn’t say just how much abuse it can take, but the protection from “accidental” drops probably means you shouldn’t push your luck.
The USB 3.0 drive is available now in 250GB to 640GB capacities, and comes with Transcend’s StoreJet Elite software for backups and encryption.
