Good news for the large number of people who held onto their Nokia E71 handsets after Nokia unveiled the E72: The company’s Ovi Maps 3.0 walk and drive navigation app that was made totally free of charge a few months ago, has now been extended to support the older E71 and E66 phones.
Pretty good news for owners of both phones, but this should be felt more by the owners of the best-selling E71. The free navigation service was previously limited to some of Nokia’s newer Eseries smartphones that included the E72, E55, E52.
The announcement does come with limitations though; since the E71 and E66 run on the older Symbian S60 3.1 operating system (compared to the newer phones that run on S60 v3.2), the download for the older phones won’t come with the app’s other features, such as the Michelin and Lonely Planet guides, but will still come with the main SatNav service that offers voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation for drivers and pedestrians.
The two phones will also officially be the last of the S60 v3.1 smartphones to be supported by this version of Ovi Maps, but every other new Nokia smartphone should come with free walk and drive navigation right out of the box.
If you’re interested (and you should be if you own any of the supported handsets), you can download the Ovi Maps software here.
