Seiko has announced that they’ll be coming out with the world’s first wristwatch to rock an Active-Matrix e-ink display. What the watch will be called is still unknown, but it’ll be able to show four levels of gray through a crisp 80,000-pixel, 300dpi screen, with features that includes the basic time and date, plus a world-clock feature that comes with a nicely-rendered image of the earth.
Sounds like a lot of hype for a wristwatch, right? While it’s true that a world-clock feature that comes with a neat photo of the earth isn’t necessarily a must-have feature, an e-ink screen does have a considerable advantage: it’s very energy efficient. That means it’ll only draw power from the battery whenever something on the screen changes, or only once a minute when displaying the basic screen.
Pricing and release dates haven’t been announced.
