“Google and Intel have teamed up with Sony to come out with a TV platform that will be called Google TV,” that’s how Google could have every TV service from multichannel video programming distributors (or “MPVDs” that include satellite, cable and telcos) shaking in their boots. But according to this post from VideoNuze, Google’s new TV platform will work with existing systems and set-top boxes, with a pass-through HDMI cable system that’ll let you plug your existing TV box into the Google TV kit, which then connects to a TV. What do you get? Your same old TV service, but spiced up with Google’s Android-based interface and TV-based internet connectivity.
It’s still unknown if Google TV will come as a stand-alone set-top box or as a feature that’ll be integrated into set-top boxes (like Blu-ray players) and upcoming HDTVs, but this new bit of news says that it’ll probably come as a Sony-built box that will run on an Intel Atom processor.
The final details are far from confirmed, but this is what Google TV looks like so far:
- It’s a set-top box that’ll come with its own set of HDMI-in and -out connections for connecting to existing home entertainment setups, so that means it should work with existing Satellite/cable TV services, and won’t conflict with your TiVo too. Imagine an interface that’ll let you switch from DirectTV to your Facebook account as if you were simply switching a channel.
- It’ll have an Ethernet and/or Wi-fi connection that will add internet browsing and web-based apps to the mix.
- It’ll run on an Android-based OS that could give you a Chrome browser for navigating the net from your living room couch. Expect a remote with a keyboard (possibly from Logitech) to be offered for this kit.
