Sony’s new clock radio, the ICF-C717PJ, offers a standard feature set with AM/FM tuning and alarm clock functions, making it perfect for the bedside. It also adds something that makes it a bit more unique: a projector that allows it to show the time on a wall or the ceiling so you can check the time without having to actually look at the clock.
We’d call it entertainment for insomniacs, but it’s really a formula for crazy if you’re the type who tends to count the minutes and hours in the dark as time passes and you just can’t sleep. Now we’re not saying having a bedside clock that can project the time on your ceiling is a bad idea; it’s actually pretty cool, coupled with a few novel features such as alarm sound options that include nature noises, and a backup battery so it doesn’t reset whenever the power goes out. We’re just saying that we’re insomniacs ourselves, and seeing “4:45 am” on the ceiling next to the imaginary sheep we’re counting doesn’t sound like it’ll help (although the nature sounds might).
Anyway, for those of you who are interested in this cool bedside kit, the clock also comes with a built-in thermometer and supports iPod/MP3 players so you can pick your wake-up alarm sounds.
Pricing info isn’t available yet, but it’s set to be released in Europe next month.
