Quite, literally, we might add. Palm’s newer smartphones that run on webOS that everyone thought was going to be pushed aside by Android just received a significant amount of “cool points.” Shortly after modders made it possible to port over Quake on Android phones, we get this: Palm and Epic Games demo’d a Palm webOS phone running the Unreal Engine 3. For non-gamers (or at least the non-hardcore type), Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 is the 3D engine behind a number of popular 3D shooter games that include Gears of War and Epic’s own Unreal Tournament 3.
It doesn’t end there though, this is primarily a demo that shows what you can do with the webOS, Palm’s Plug-in Development Kit (or PDK), a whole lot of free time, and—as with the case of Quake for Android—the apparent willingness to port over high-end 3D games that’s near impossible to master without the use of a proper keyboard and mouse.
But that’s really not the point here. All you need to know is that if you’re looking for a better gaming experience for your new Palm mobile, the floodgates are now open, and you should get them pretty soon, since Palm just released the PDK last week—basically the software that the dev community needs to port games and apps over to the webOS platform. The PDK also includes the means to port iPhone games to webOS too, so it shouldn’t take long before you enjoy the hell out of your, um, Palm.
If you’re looking to dick around—or seriously develop some games—with the Unreal Engine 3, you’re welcome to download the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) here. The page also comes with some UDK-based games you can try out.
