Western Digital has just expanded their My Passport family of portable drives by unveiling the My Passport AV. It still pretty much looks like the rest of the My Passport drives, although WD claims this one to be “optimized for video storage and playback,” and is designed to work primarily with your home entertainment center, not just with a PC.
What exactly does that mean? That means that this drive can be plugged into a number of set top devices, HDTVs, audio-video devices, and game consoles—something that’s usually impossible to do using the average PC-based portable drive (simply put, set-top kits will usually read from a USB flash drive, but not from a USB portable drive).
There’s a growing list of compatible devices on the drive’s product page that includes Blu-ray disc players, HDTVs, camcorders (Sony camcorders with Direct Copy functionality, in particular), WD’s own WD TV media players and game consoles that includes the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
The drive is now available with a single 320GB model for $110—a mere $10 more than the vanilla 320GB My Passport drive. It comes bundled with a matching AV stand and an adapter cable for Sony camcorders.
