We’ve been barraged by a lot of new solid state drives the whole of last year, but it was just a bit hard to get on the solid state bandwagon when they’re still priced at the equivalent of an arm and a leg per gigabyte of storage space. OCZ’s latest is a breath of fresh air though, offering average Joes the chance to pick up a solid state drive upgrade on the cheap.
It’s called the Onyx Series, a line of entry-level drives that focus on value while still delivering relatively good performance as a basic upgrade for desktops and laptops. They’re multi-level cell (MLC)-based drives that come with a 64MB cache, and lists up to 125MB/s read and up to 70MB/s write speeds.
OCZ didn’t mention a specific price point, but their release did say that the 32GB drives will be priced below $100. A pretty good deal if you’re looking to spice up your computer with faster data access, shorter boot-ups, and improved battery lives.
