Google Maps adds feature for cyclists
Software, The Net - Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Whether you’re looking to get some exercise done, save on gas money or you’re just a fan of skin-tight bike shorts, here’s something you might want to check out: Google Maps has just added a new feature called Biking Directions to give cyclists route suggestions across bike trails and bike-friendly roads. Navigation isn’t just a turn-left, turn-right thing though, since the new feature also factors in traffic and elevation so you don’t go weaving in with the cars or faint trying to go up a steep hill.

The interface is optimized for pedal-pushing, including different lines that indicate bike trails with no motor vehicles, streets with bike lanes, and other streets that are recommended for cyclists (including streets that may not have a bike lane, but with light motor traffic). Suggested route points can also be dragged and dropped across the map to customize the route, in case you want to take a more scenic way to your destination.
