According to a DigiTimes report (who in turn got the info from sources within the notebook industry), Acer is planning to come out with a new ultra-thin notebook with a touch keyboard and a glass lid. The screen will be made up of a single piece of reinforced glass substrate with a colored back serving as the lid, effectively shedding off having to add a plastic or aluminum shell. The touch keyboard should also help slim down the resulting notebook profile, potentially resulting in a notebook that should break down the barriers of what we know as ultra-slim design altogether.
The touch keyboard might prove to be a stretch though; you have to wonder if the world is ready for typing solely on a touch-based keyboard—the technology is awesome and that’s something we’d like to see, but we think the mechanical feel of a nice, crisp keyboard is something we’re not ready to drop.
According to the report, the border-less glass-lid design should help reduce material costs, but we somehow don’t see this as something they’ll be selling at a bargain.
