Asus intros 9 inch DR 900 e book reader Asus DR950

Just when we thought everyone has moved past the readers, here comes Asus with their first one. Dubbed as the DR-900, Asus’ e-book reader sports a 9-inch, 1024 x 768-resolution mono-color touchscreen, plus built-in connectivity options that allow it to go online to fetch you something else to read.

Slim and simple, the DR-900 comes with all the basic trappings of, well, your basic reader. The networking capabilities push it up a notch though, with both Wi-fi and optional 3G connections available. The connections allow you to browse the news, aside from the usual downloading feature for acquiring supported content (ePub, PDF and text files are supported).

The DR-900 also comes with a headphone jack for listening to text-to-speech audio and MP3 music, and a battery that’s listed to last up to 10,000 page turns, or roughly two-and-a-half run-throughs of Agatha Christie’s “The Complete Miss Marple,” the current record-holder for thickest book at 4,032 pages.

Pricing and availability hasn’t been announced, although the relatively basic feature set is expected to translate to a reader that should be relatively affordable.

To turn all those pages into something that can be technically called a single “book,” the 12.6-inch spine had to be “engineered by a master craftsman.” The result is a 17-pound book bound in leather, and comes in a suede-lined wooden box with brass fittings for fans and collectors.

There are 68 crimes committed; 11 philandering lovers; 68 secrets and lies; 22 false accusations; 59 red-herrings and 21 romances. A total of 143 cups of tea are drunk in the massive volume, there are 66 maids and 47 garments are knitted.

Additional numbers: In case you were interested, only 500 copies of this limited edition book have been made. Each sells for £1000.
