HP unveils slim, multitouch Elitebook 2740p tablet HPEliteBook2740p

HP has just turned out a couple of new entries for their EliteBook range of business-geared porta-PCs, highlighted by the EliteBook 2740p Tablet PC, a convertible tablet that comes with a 12.1-inch multitouch display, a 3.8-pound weight, and a high-end spec if you need premium performance to go with the thin-and-light frame.

It’s still listed as “coming soon,” but the specs are out: this multitouch tablet can be configured to be quite the mobile powerhouse, with processor options that top out with a 2.66GHz Intel Core i7-620M processor, up to 8GBs of DDR3 1333MHz memory, and either a 250GB hard drive or 160GB solid state drive for storage. The tablet also comes with a Windows 7 operating system, to take advantage of the multitouch screen.

For the budget-conscious, HP also offers more mainstream options with a Core i5-520M or 540M processor, but the good news is that despite the relatively high-end spec, it’s still listed to run for up to five hours on a standard 6-cell battery pack. If you need more for forays into the wilds, HP also offers an optional HP 2700 Ultra-Slim battery that’s listed to give 11 hours in tandem with the standard pack.

The slim tablet also holds enough space to house the usual array of connections, plus an optional mobile broadband module with GPS that connects to either AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon’s networks, while keeping the frame relatively slim at 1.28-inches thick and rugged. Thankfully, the tablet isn’t just made for city-based businesses; the shell has been designed to allow you to take it to less-than ideal workplaces, built to meet military standards for vibration, dust, humidity, altitude and extreme temperatures.

If you’re just into the whole idea of “business mobility” with no use for a touchscreen, HP has also added the EliteBook 2540p. It’s a non-tablet 12.1-inch notebook, but bears the distinction of being the EliteBook line’s lightest notebook PC at 3.3 pounds. It doesn’t differ much from the 2740p tablet though, with a spec that’s every bit as much geared for workers on the move; the 2540p can also be bought with Core i5/ i7 processors with the same memory and storage options, but without the convertible tablet’s body.

The HP EliteBook 2740p starts at $1,599, while the 2540p is a bit cheaper sarting from $1,099. Both EliteBooks are expected to be available in the US next month.
