Smartbooks are an emerging new mobile device category that’s coined to describe a compact, netbook-like device running a smartphone’s processor (like Qualcomm’s ARM chip) with built-in 3G data connectivity. This device is not a smartbook. It’s not even a netbook. It’s actually an 11.6-inch Intel CULV-based notebook by German computer maker Smartbook AG called the Smartbook Logo, although it does have some smartbook parts.
Just so you’re not confused, all you need to know is that the German company is fighting to keep their trademark Smartbook name in Germany. That means that when you’re in Germany, the term “smartbook” means them (or at least that’s how they want it). We have no idea what term they propose the Germans use to describe what the rest of the world knows as a smartbook (maybe they call it the Kleincomputer mit Handy, but we’re not really sure. Our German is rough and, well, we’re just guessing), so let’s move onto the actual product.
Set to be introduced during the CeBIT show in March, Smartbook AG’s Smartbook Logo (Smartbook Logo is the actual notebook model’s name) will fall under the thin-and-light ultraportable notebook category, with features that include an 11.6-inch display and a 2.8-pound weight. Specs include a power-efficient Intel CULV processor, 1GB of RAM, and Windows 7 Home Premium preinstalled into a 250GB hard drive that makes for, well, a very basic notebook spec for an ultraportable.
It does have a few highlights though, with a listed battery life of 8 hours and a built-in 3G UMTS modem that makes it comparable to a smartbook, but with an 11.6-inch notebook’s spec… and a rather plush notebook’s price that starts at around $940.
