This started as a sort of challenge over at Android and Me, with a bounty for anyone who could port a full copy of Quake, a PC-based first person shooter (the original that was released back in 1999), to the mobile Android platform and allow for multiplayer gaming over Wi-fi. After that was accomplished, people started working on mobile (Android) ports of Quake 2 and Quake 3… and succeeded. (video available after the cut.)
Never mind that using the Droid’s touchscreen and keypad makes for a rather clunky way to move around an FPS game, and never mind if the framerate allows for 2 players on a small map on the mobile version of Quake 3 (dubbed as kwaak3 by the developer), at least we know it’s possible and it’s awesome. The mobile port for Quake 2 (or “Quake2Android”) should be more mobile-friendly though, with the framerate holding up with multiple players.
