Samsung just rolled out a couple of new pocket video camcorders, the HMX-U15 and HMX-U20—a product niche that’s heating up thanks to the YouTube generation. Unlike the rest of the bunch that offer the basics into nicely colored shells, and kits that promise easy operation and uploads, Samsung packed some serious tech into the two new models, including 1080p HD video captures and a 3x optical zoom, which is a pretty rare feature in these here parts (…the parts of the world that revolves solely on pocket camcorders that is).
Both cams can shoot 1080p videos through a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor and 2-inch displays, although the higher-end HMX-U20 comes with the rare 3x optical zoom lens. The U15 uses a more conventional digital zoom, but can capture stills at a maximum of 14 megapixels compared to the U20 that’s limited to 10MP.
Both are pretty similar on the outside and in though, with built-in tech that includes software-based image stabilization, easy operation, and a time-lapse photography mode that’s always a lot of fun to have in a cam.
They’ll be positioned above Samsung’s existing U10 ($180) along the pocket camcorder line, with the U15 costing $230, while the U20 is a little more expensive at $250. Both pocket camcorders are due out in the spring.
