MSI has just officially launched the GE600, the 16-inch performance-geared gaming notebook that was first unveiled during last month’s CES show. Not to be confused with the GX600 (another G-series “extreme” gaming notebook they launched way back in 2008), the GE600 still packs the hardware that’s good enough for gaming on the go along with an extensive set of features for HD entertainment (which is probably what the “E” stands for).
The GE600’s main spec revolves around the Intel Core i5 processor and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 graphics chip with 1GB of VRAM, along with an unspecified amount of DDR3 memory that gives it enough muscle to handle 3D games. Storage options range from a minimum 250GB hard drive to a max of 500GBs, plus USB ports and a card reader around the frame for expansion.
But here’s where the GE600 moves from being “just another high-spec notebook” to “high-spec multimedia machine:” MSI fits this system with a 720p HD Webcam for, well, high-end videochats, and “theater class” stereo speakers with a built-in subwoofer and SRS Premium Sound support for relatively better sound. Take note of the word “relatively;” that means this should sound way better than the stock cans on your average laptop, but external speakers (preferably of the multi-channel variety) are always recommended. Adding a good set of speakers should work well with this laptop too; it supports 8-channel speaker kits.
As for performance enhancements, the GE600 comes with MSI’s GPU Boost feature for pusing graphics performance on-the-fly, and the ECO Engine feature that toggles the system’s performance between five different modes to save on battery life. MSI also added something called Cinema Pro Technology that optimizes the system to a “cinema mode” that optimizes the screen with “more details and colors.”
MSI also incorporated a new design concept—certainly a welcome change compared to the “blazing” graphics on their older G-series laptops—that features MSI’s Color Film Print on the GE600’s surface. This laptop sports a black coat on the lid, while a unique gold-to-black gradient coats the palmrest. “Low-key luxury” is the term used on MSI’s PR, and we have to agree that the subtlety used on the new design definitely works for this performer.
Pricing and availability hasn’t been announced, but it should be available through the usual online retailers soon enough.
