Sony has just previewed a couple of new concept cams during the PMA show, showing a compact prototype under their Alpha line of cams that use an EVIL system to imply that they’re compact cams with Electronic Viewfinders and Interchangeable Lens (get it?) and not something that will kick your dog just for the hell of it.
The EVIL concept looks like it’ll be Sony’s line of Micro Four Thirds cams that’ll allow you to fit DSLR-quality lens onto a compact-sized cam. They didn’t give enough details, but the concept cams did show a pop-up flash and manual control dials on top. They did say that the EVIL concept gives the cams “the quality of a DSLR” on a compact though, which is exactly what the Micro Four Thirds standard promises (or at least tries to offer users who want advanced performance without the bulk of a DSLR).
So yeah, in a nutshell, we’re expecting these compacts to follow the Micro Four Thirds trend. Sony didn’t mention anything about release dates or availability since these are concepts after all. But if they ever do launch them in the near future, they’re going to be a bit late to the party—other brands have already been putting out second and third-gen cams that use the “DSLR performance in a compact” concept.
