JVC has just announced the Everio GZ-HM340, a new, relatively affordable HD camcorder that can shoot 1080i HD video and store it to its built-in flash memory instead of a built-in hard drive.
Now, 16GBs might not seem all that big compared to other hard drive-based Everios that pack at least 80GBs, but 16GBs should be good enough for around 1 hour and 20 minutes of high-quality AVCHD (H.264) footage. Now, we can’t assume what you need a camcorder for, but 80 minutes seems good enough. Anyway, if you need more space, the HM340 also comes with an SDHC card slot for popping in cards of up to 32GB.
It’s a compact camcorder that should feel comfy enough to palm, adding a Konica Monilta 20x optical zoom lens, a 1.37MP CMOS sensor to the mix. In-cam features include face detection, one touch YouTube uploads, and a time-lapse recording mode.
The GZ-HM340B is set to start shipping later this month for $500–a good deal, considering that some standard-def cams go for more.
