The Windows Phone 7 platform may be just around the corner (Microsoft is expected to unveil the rebranded mobile platform at the Mobile World Congress on March 30th), but that’s not stopping Sony Ericsson form unveiling a new smartphone that runs on Windows Mobile 6.5.3. Tagged as the Aspen, the new handset features a full QWERTY keypad for messaging, and a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 screen that kind of reminds us of Nokia’s E72 (but with a touchscreen and stylus).
The phone falls under SE’s GreenHeart line of eco-friendly products that are built with eco-friendly processes and materials, packaged with an electronic manual, and comes with an eco-friendly power charger. All good and well for mother earth, but here’s the stuff that you might be particularly interested in:
SE has implemented an improved front-end user interface that features larger, more touch-friendly icons and areas, and a Start menu at the bottom. The home screen also shows improved visuals, with easily viewable status updates, customizable panels that can be set to change through the day, and a Slide View feature that allows for easy multitasking.

The specs describe a mid-range WinMo smartphone, highlighted by a quad-band, 3G, GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-fi connectivity, 3.2MP camera, plus a microSD card slot for adding up to 16GBs of storage. Preloaded software includes stuff for work and play, with Outlook Mobile syncs, Google Maps, Facebook and YouTube apps, and support for Java applications.
No pricing info is available, but it’ll be available in black and white versions when it’s released sometime in the second quarter of this year.
