Olympus intros two SP Ultrazooms, two new Stylus Tough cams olympus sp 800uz

Olympus has come out with a pair of new ultrazoom cams for their SP range, headlined by the 14-megapixel SP-800UZ that features a 30X wide-angle optical zoom lens. Described (by Olympus, at least) as the “longest, most powerful zoom in the world,” the lens (F2.8–F5.6, 28–840mm equivalent) can also pull back for wide angle panoramic shots.

The $350 800UZ also comes with other high-end features (for a non-DSLR) that includes HD 720p video recording, a large 3-inch LCD display, AF tracking, and 2GBs of internal storage that can be expanded with an SDHC card slot. The cam also features dual-image stabilization that combines sensor-shift IS with digital IS to keep the high-zoom lens steady, and a set of in-cam technologies (Shadow Adjustment, Beauty Mode, Perfect Shot Preview) that does the tweaking for automatic optimized images.

A second SP-series cam, the SP-600UZ, has also been introduced as a step down the line after the flagship 800UZ. The 600UZ comes with a 15x zoom lens, a 12MP sensor, and a smaller 2.7-inch screen, but keeps the rest of the tech (dual IS, 720p video) for $100 less at $250.

The 8010 can survive a drop from 6.6 feet. What happens when it's dropped from 6.7 feet will forever remain a mystery.

Actually, they both share the same imaging tech, with a 14MP sensor, a 5x optical zoom, and 2.7-inch displays (over the 12MP sensor and 3.6x zoom lens of the previous generation), but feature bodies that offer different levels of protection.

The 8010 is the more “extreme” model, with a body that’s waterproof up to 33 feet and shockproof for 6.6-foot drops, while the 6020 can be submerged down to 16 feet and dropped from a height of 5 feet. Both cams are also freezeproof (up to 14°F/-10°C), feature dual image stabilization, and HD 720p video recording.

The Tough 8010 costs $400, while the 6020 will sell for $300. Both will Tough cams will be released this month, while the SP ultrazooms are set for a March release.
