During a town hall meeting with Apple employees after the big iPad launch, Steve Jobs got quite a few big cheers from the crowd when he gave out some quote-worthy answers to questions about the competition. According to the Wired report (who apparently got the quotes from someone who was there but can’t be named), Jobs had this to say about Google:
“We did not enter the search business. They entered the phone business. Make no mistake, they want to kill the iPhone. We won’t let them,” he says. When the topic was about to go another direction, Jobs continued his rant. “I want to go back to that other question first and say one more thing, he says. This don’t be evil mantra, it’s bullshit.”
And when the topic turned to Adobe (who, apparently, wasn’t impressed with the iPad’s lack of Flash support), Jobs said, “They are lazy. They have all this potential to do interesting things but they just refuse to do it. They don’t do anything with the approaches that Apple is taking, like Carbon. Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy,” he says. “Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it’s because of Flash. No one will be using Flash. The world is moving to HTML5.”
Ok, well, he kind of has a point regarding Flash and browser-based crashes.
Anyway, according to a later update on the Wired report, someone else who was also there wanted to correct the quote. According to the new cannot-be-named source, Jobs actually said “…don’t be evil is a load of crap.” Maybe Jobs said it, maybe he didn’t. In our mind, he said “bullshit,” because it’s just more entertaining that way.
By the way, we really don’t care what people say behind closed doors. But when the stories exit the closed doors, well that’s just interesting. Like Tiger’s fall. Or Clinton-Lewinsky. And Kanye… if the guy learned to speak his mind behind closed doors.
Also, in case you were wondering what Goggle’s “don’t be evil” mantra was all about, they made up an “evil scale” to weigh corporate actions. You can check it out here, where you’ll learn that “using an iPod to ignore others” is level-5 evil. Just one level before doing something like selling Osama Bin Laden weed (which is a level-6 kind of evil, according to the scale).
