Here’s something you might want to check out if you’re looking for a little bit more security from something that should be as simple as a flash drive. Kingston has just announced the DataTraveler 5000, a drive with a capacity of up to 16GBs and enough data and physical protection that’s good enough for the government.
To begin with here’s the list of security enhancements that’s enough to make Jack Bauer proud (ok, it actually meets the Suite B standards approved by the US government, but “Jack Bauer-level standards” just sounds more interesting): the DT5000 sports 256-bit hardware encryption, FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certification, XTS-AES cipher mode and ECC algorithms. All of that amounts to a drive that needs complex passwords to crack. And after a few errant tries, the drive will lockdown, shutting out would-be spies, corporate cheats, stalkers, and maniacal ex-girlfriends.
It’s also rugged enough to take more than the usual pounding, with a titanium-coated, stainless-steel case to protect it from bumps, drops, and overweight secret agents that might stick it into their back-pockets. It can also survive dips into up to 4 feet of water, in case you need to save the world with your data during a flood.
The DataTraveler 5000 is available in 2, 4, 8, and 16GB capacities and is backed by a five-year warranty. Pricing isn’t available yet.
Fun-YouTube-clip-that-has-nothing-to-do-with-this-post #128102: The video below has absolutely nothing to do with the DT5000, flash drives or data, but we did mention Jack Bauer (yeah, we’re a bunch of 24 fanboys. So sue us). Just in case you’re a fan too, did you see what he did to Santa? We know the security of the free world rests in his ability to get things done within 24 episodes, but this is just going too far.
