Sony Ericsson has officially launched a high-end touchscreen phone that they’ve labeled as the Vivaz. We don’t know what’s up with the name, but it does come with a sweet spec that’s headlined by its ability to record 720p HD videos. Really, what’s up with the name? If you had to pick a phone and went by just the name, would you pick up a “Vivaz” before you tried out an “iPhone” (which obviously sounds so Apple) or a “Droid?”
Previously known as the “Kurara,” the Vivaz is a full touch smartphone that runs on a Symbian S60 platform (an operating system usually found on Nokia’s smartphones) instead of going along with the trend that leans towards the Android OS. It’s pretty high end, with a spec that includes quad-band, 3G, and HSDPA network support, Bluetooth, Wi-fi and GPS connectivity, plus A-GPS support for navigation; all in a phone that’s reasonably slim at 12.5mm thick.

The highlight is, of course, its video capture capabilities, centered around an 8MP (3264 x 2448 resolution) optics with autofocus and LED flash and the 3.2-inch (360 x 640) touchscreen LCD display. This thing is designed to let you shoot high-def 720p videos using the built in cam and screen, plus built-in apps that let you upload photos and videos instantly to online sites such as YouTube or Picasa via a Wi-fi connection. (Check out the video below.)
Other functions include a media player, TV-out, and QuickOffice productivity tools, plus a lot of apps for online integration, including Google maps and instant access to Facebook and Twitter. It’s a full Symbian smartphone though, so you’re free to add anything else you might need.
The Vivaz will be available in four colors (silver, black, blue, and ruby), and is expected to be released sometime in March.
