Geek icon Steve Wozniak, the co-founding technical genius behind the giant we now know as Apple (a.k.a. “The Other Steve”), was asked during an NBC Bay Area interview what his current favorite gadget was. His answer? “It’s a non-Apple product.” What’s he talking about? It’s obviously Google’s just-released Android-powered Nexus One (manufactured by HTC). Now, that may have sounded surprising, given his Apple-roots (roots? This guy was the Apple tree’s frikkin’ seed!), but apparently, he didn’t ditch his iPhones for Google’s latest smartie.

After the story made its runs across the internets (and after a lot of Apple-nitpickers, ‘Droid loyalists, and… well, basically every other geek-fanboy chimed in), Woz put out a comment on Gizmodo’s post to set things straight:

Actually, everyone got it wrong. My favorite phones are my iPhones. When asked what my favorite gadgets were I took it to mean new gadgets I was playing with (that I considered good). I am not a switcher but I’m not going to tell people that the Nexus One is not a good gadget. Same for the Droid. I continually buy and play with new hot gadgets because I gets asked about them all the time. I have had prior Android phones that I didn’t consider good. I usually have between 2 and 6 different cell phones on me, more when there are interesting product introductions.

I try mainly to make good comments but I’m honest about flaws too. I don’t get into arguments trying to claim that there are objective reasons that make one person’s phone better than another’s. It’s subjective. You can’t win such arguments, only have a stressful life doing so. I have no problem praising and learning from non-Apple products as well as Apple products, when they are good.

See, he still keeps his iPhones close. And there’s nothing really wrong with picking up a Nexus One (or any other gadget if you can afford it) during its release date. If anyone should get first dibs on new tech, we’re giving up our spot on a line to Woz, just to hear what he thinks of it first. Still, that’s pretty good press for Google’s new smartphone. When Steve Wozniak, a.k.a. “the guy who basically invented the personal computer,” says that his favorite gadget “right now” is Google’s Nexus One, that’s always a good sign to check it out “right now”.
